Low Protein Cookery for Phenylketonuria $22.59 Much more than a cookbook,ILow Protein Cookery for Phenylketonuria/I(PKU) is a practical and easy-to-use guide for those who must maintain a protein-restricted diet for treatment of PKU or similar inherited diseases of protein metabolism. It contains hundreds of helpful suggestions for managing the diet. This third edition ofILow Protein Cookery for PKU/Iappears exactly twenty years after the original 1977 publication and includes the 450-plus recipes and the hints from the 1988 second edition that have been used and enjoyed by families for nearly a decade.BR The major new feature of the third edition is entirely new nutrient calculations. The available food supply has changed significantly in the past fifteen years, and nutrient information is much better now. The nutrient calculations in this edition of the cookbook are based on the updated 1995ILow Protein Food List for PKU /Icompiled by the author, which is the most widely used food list for the PKU diet in the United States. Some of the changes in nutrient values are subtle, others more significant; all reflect the best information currently available.BR ILow Protein Cookery for PKU/Ioffers recipes that appeal to a wide range of ages, suit a wide range of individual diet requirements, and facilitate integration of the diet into normal family eating routines. Many of the recipes are suitable for the entire family; others include instructions for adapting the recipe to suit the needs of family members not on the diet, or are accompanied by recipes for the preparation of similar non-diet items. The recipes provide gram weights when appropriate, for greater accuracy in preparing the recipes and in maintaining the diet. “The author is well aware of the difficulties and time necessary for preparation of a special diet. Most of the recipes are simple and easy to prepare. . . . The chapter on ‘Everyday Tips&#@6—=p£×ÿ¾Úð |

The Protein Power Lifeplan $1.23 The authors of Protein Power are back to advocate the protein-rich, moderate-fat, carbohydrate-restricted diet that opposes the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet that every professional medical and dietetic organization (including those who have no diet books to sell) believes to be your best bet for avoiding heart disease, the number one killer. The authors insist, in the face of all this medical opposition, that the whole idea that fat and cholesterol cause heart disease is just that: an idea. We’re meant to be hunters, say the authors: bring on the meat. Let’s go back to the Paleolithic diet (no mention of the brief life span of Paleolithic men and women). The Protein Power Lifeplan is not easy reading–most of the book is made up of scientific explanations, research summaries and interpretations, and nutritional warnings–but no recipes. Besides recommending eating protein and fat, the authors recommend sunbathing without sunblock (but never, never let your skin burn!) and exercises such as bringing home the buffalo and defending the camp. The authors admit that if you’re trying to lose weight, you have to limit calories, but if you’re not, you can munch on nuts, seeds, nut butters, cheeses, jerky, guacamole, and olives all day long.Carbohydrates, say the authors, are totally nonessential to your health and well-being–words to make dieticians and cardiologists shudder. |

The ABS Diet $10.83 From the Publisher: Whether you want to change your body to improve your health, your looks, your athletic performance, or your sex appeal, The Abs Diet offers a simple promise: if you follow this plan, you can accomplish your goal. The editor-in-chief of Men’s Health details a smart, sensible, easy-to-follow program that will never leave you feeling hungry, restricted, or deprived. You’ll learn how to eat to keep your body’s natural fat burners stoked at all times so you burn fat and build muscle all day, every day–even when you sleep. You’ll discover what 12 power foods should become the staples of your diet, why 95 percent of all diets fail, and why The Abs Diet is different. From The Critics: Eat everything. Concentrate on whole grains. Drink milk. Balance protein with carbohydrates. Avoid processed sugars. Do some exercise. The idea that a diet book making such proposals comes as a pleasant surprise shows just how far afield we’ve gone in the search for new ways to be fit. The only thing new about this diet by the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health is its name, and this, one can presume, is because nowadays, a book simply called Sensible Eating wouldn’t sell. The book’s title is indeed misleading; only the final chapter deals solely with abs. The rest is full of rational recommendations for a realistic diet plan: eat more and smaller meals; have oatmeal in the morning for a nourishing breakfast; don’t starve yourself; drink plenty of water; and stay away from sodas and foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup. Whether readers will, in the end, walk away with abs of steel is not really the point. They’ll control their weight in a healthy way, without counting calories, cutting out whole food groups or supporting the beef futures market. Best of all, this book tells readers why it works: increase your body’s metabolism, gain some muscle and fat burns away. The authors make this seem like a fresh and very attainable ideal. – Publishers Weekly (June) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. |

Vegetarian Diet and Dishes $38.7 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS. Milk and dairy products seem to almost every vegetarian an unobjectionable and highly acceptable addition to purely vegetable foods, and they are accordingly to be included in making up our assemblage of dishes. Agreeable as they may be to our early mammalian nursing and long inherited tastes, they certainly cannot be considered wholly necessary articles of food; for, in Japan, milk and its derivative products were, forty years ago, practically altogether lacking, and yet were not missed; and milk even seriously disagreed with unaccustomed adults. Of course, babies really need food of a different chemical composition from what an adult requires; for they must rapidly form new muscles, and not merely replace what is worn out by use. Their food, then, should apparently be richer in protein than what is needful to grown men. Moreover we shall see that there is a wholly satisfactory, in some respects a better, vegetable substitute (terralac) for milk, of practically identical composition. Whole milk, as seen in our table, contains (disregarding water) about one-half more protein than a model diet requires, and twice as much fat as such a diet, and about as much ash as the average of all foods; leaving not much more than half the requirement of carbohydrates. Milk, then, goes well with foods that are deficient in fat, somewhat deficient in protein, and abounding in carbohydrates. Butter is almost pure fat, and can be used to supply its lack in other foods. Cheese, on the other hand, contains more than twice as much protein and more than three times as much fat as a model diet requires; and carbohydrates are almost wholly lacking. It can, therefore, supply the protein and fat that other articles of food lack; and may either be cooked in the same dish with … |
