How to stop gas (flatulence) while enjoy a high fiber diet?

I love oatmeal and lots of vegetables, e.g. broccolis, cauliflowers, sweet potatoes, etc.
How can I deal with the gas from from eating those food? Suppose I am not going to give up these food.
Can adding baking soda into a cooked oatmeal work? Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Okay, first, I’m from a Scottish family, so we eat oatmeal every day.
It was making me fart like mad every time I sprinkled some sugar on there (no gas for plain oatmeal). I just couldn’t stop doing that because I grew up putting some sugar on top. Well, I found out about malt (maltose). It’s sweet, but still a complex carb, so it digests at the same rate as the oats and does not cause yeasts/bacteria to get all excited causing fermentation and flatulence. I found that at the health food store malt is jacked up in price. I found that the Chinese/Asian community use it a lot and it’s cheap in Chinese supermarkets and also found in Chinese herbalist/herbal shops (it’s also a medicine; food is your medicine in China). Looks just like this: http://photos.imageevent.com/gchoong/ingredients/maltose.jpg
Looks like this inside:

http://www.sugoodsweets.com/blog/hello/69/1533/400/maltose%20string.jpg

It’s really thick and like maple syrup will stiffen in cold temperatures and liquefy in warmer temperatures.

broccolis, cauliflowers, cabbage, and others are famous for causing gas. Not much you can do about it, but I found that stir frying and leaving them hot all the way through but crisp works well. Soggy overcooked = gas.

Also, look at your food combinations. If you eat certain foods together, you are creating the gas because of indigestion.

Here, this chart explains it all:

http://www.alderbrooke.com/images/chart.jpg

People in other countries grow up knowing about food combination from their parents and society in general. Everyone knows that if you eat this and that together, that’s a no-no. But in N. America, anything goes. Eat eat eat and if ya don’t puke, then it’s okay. But then you get acid reflux, indigestion, gas, upset tummy, etc. Memorize the chart. Put it on your fridge. I’m teaching my kids about it, and my two year old decide not to listen to me. She just had pancakes and now she wanted oranges and was really bugging me about it, so I said, “Well, you know it’s a bad mix, I just told you that, right, you still want to eat it?” She did, and she ate some oranges. About an hour later, she puked it all up. “See, I told you so, a bad mix.” “Yeeaaaah.” she said, finally understanding. Hey, they will never believe you until they experience it themselves.

And as other suggested, your digestion may not be very good. Work on promoting the growth of the good bacteria (flora) in your intestines. Refined foods and refined sugar and white vinegar and alcohol and antibiotics etc. will kill these off. Can take a long time to fix this. Look to foods that promote their growth and avoid those that kill them off or promote the growth of competing yeasts (the bad guys) such as white flour and white sugar etc..

high fiber foods
What foods do you recommend for a high fiber diet?

I am dealing with hemorrhoids, and I’m only twenty two, but they have gotten pretty bad. As a result, i’m trying to eat a high fiber diet. Usually it consists of

–apples and pears
–triscuits
–raisin bran/raisin nut bran
–oatmeal
–whole grain pasta

Can anyone tell me what foods they eat that help them increase fiber in their diet? I know that regular fruits and veggies should do the trick, but its not in this case. I am going to see my doctor tomorrow, because its gotten so bad, but whether or not i have to have it surgically removed, I am still going to need a high fiber diet. It would be great if there were any snack foods you could suggest that I could munch on throughout the day. I guess you could say I’m looking for very high fiber foods in particular. A super fiber food (if you will). Any suggestions? The more specific the better.

Thanks!

Be careful about suddenly increasing your daily fiber intake. If you suddenly add large amounts of fiber to your diet, you may experience bloating, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramping. It is best to add fiber to your diet gradually, eating small amounts of fiber rich foods. Additional fiber can be added slowly until you are consuming a healthy amount.

Tips for Eating Fiber

* Eat a variety of foods
* Do not completely rely on fiber supplements
* Limit your intake of processed foods
* Increase your fiber intake gradually
* Try to consume 25 to 35 grams of fiber every day

Types of Fiber

There are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers dissolve in water. Soluble fibers include: pectin, guar, carrageenan, gums, mucilage, and oat bran. Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibers include cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

high fiber food
What is the tastiest high fiber food that you can offer a child?

I feel like I am running out of options. The high fiber o’s I bought taste like dog food, she won’t eat prunes or raisins. The gnu bars from trader joe’s are disgusting to her. What can I offer my 7 year old that she will enjoy and that will be good for her digestive system. She is in pain when she goes to the bathroom and bleeds at times with bowel movements. Help me!

Oatmeal every morning – cooked from steel cut oats the night before, microwaved to heat it up.

I change it up with sliced canned peaches and cereal cream

On special occasions I put in a packet of mini-Oreo cookies and add milk

A hand full of blue-berries and maple syrup is good

A grated apple, cinnamon and brown sugar with milk is good.

Serve all of the above with a fresh sliced orange, make sure she drinks lots of water through out the day. Cut sugar, white flour, high fat snacks and introduce raw veggies and dip, whole grain breads or crackers. No cold cuts, limit juices.

Be sure she exercises everyday.

You are the mom, you make the rules.

Fiber and Your Brain

There has been an increase in recent years of the numbers of people who experience a variety of weaknesses in their bones and brains. But new studies believe that if you follow a healthy, high-fiber, diet it may stop the break down of the brain and bones, and actually keep those parts of your body healthy into your later years.

Unfortunately the numbers of those who are suffering with the brain disease Alzheimer’s is growing. Right now there are 4.5 million American’s who have it. Another 350,000 will find out this year that they do as well. Even worse, some 60,000 will die from it.

At the rate the numbers are growing, there should be over 13 million Americans suffering the mentally debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s by 2050. With that frightening number in mind, what if someone told you there was a simple path to not being one of those numbers, just by eating more fruits, vegetables, beans, grains and other fiber-rich foods.

This is exactly what a group of scientists in Sweden are saying. In their study they found that there are a number of things that may help determine who gets Alzheimer’s and dementia. They discovered that regulating blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and weight control might help people avoid getting these brain-related disorders are. High-fiber foods could be the key since they have the benefits of helping to regulate blood pressure and keeping good and bad cholesterol levels in check.

In addition, fiber may be a friend to your weight loss plans. As you ingest fiber, it sends a message to your body release CCK hormone (cholecystokinin). This hormone sends a memo to your brain telling it that you have had enough to eat and that you are full. High-fiber foods also help moderate blood sugar levels by breaking down slowly.

Fiber also assists in weight loss by acting as a cleaner as it moves through your system. When it is making its way through the digestive tract, it picks up extra calories that have not yet been absorbed and are sitting around, then removes them from your body through bowel movements.

Bones and Fiber

When it comes to the war against weakening bones with old age, fiber may be a great ally. Framingham Heart Study researchers in Massachusetts conducted a long duration survey of the effects of diet on bone health. Over the years, they discovered that the people surveyed who kept their diets full of higher-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and beans had better bone health than those who had less of these items in their diet.

As you consider that 30 million Americans have the osteoporosis bone disease, you may wonder if fiber can help you prevent being next. While various studies cannot guarantee that fiber is the catalyst to being healthy, it could be. They do believe that it is most important that the fiber consumed is raw fiber from fresh, non-processed foods. Processed foods end up with a lower fiber level because of the processing.

Many studies with animals, including monkeys, have shown that reducing calorie intake significantly extends the life span. Normally, reducing calorie intake is achieved by reducing food intake. In people, such a life style, reducing one”s food intake, is not likely to attract many individuals. Thus, another approach is outlined in this book: increasing fiber consumption at the expense of calorie-rich food components. The book discusses the role of fiber in food intake and digestion. It gives the latest information on the role of a fiber-rich diet in relation to diabetes, heart disease, weight control, cancer and gastrointestinal regularity. Tasty recipes rich in fiber are also included as is a table of fiber content of most common foods.

And what do you want for Christmas this year, asks Fiberlady? GI? GI Joe? Sorry, but I cannot consciously support the military-industrial complex by purchasing idols of warmongers for children to reenact their misplaced power. Okay, go ahead. Tell Santa.

The only GI that I can conscientiously promote is the Glycemic Index otherwise known as the GI. Originally used to manage diabetes, the theory behind the Glycemic Index is simply to reduce insulin-related problems by identifying and monitoring foods that have the greatest effect on your blood sugar.

If you want to learn (it’s as easy as buttering a carrot bran muffin), here’s how it works. The Glycemic Index system ranks foods from 0 (good) to 100 (not so good) according to the effect on blood sugar levels after eating. Low-GI foods (less than 55) produce a gradual rise in blood sugar that’s easy on the body, keeping blood sugar levels fairly tame. Foods between 55 and 70 are intermediate-GI foods. Foods with high-GI numbers (more than 70) make blood sugar as well as insulin levels quickly surge.

A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into glucose. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. Adding protein and/or fat or increasing acidity may alter the GI of any given carbohydrate-laden food.

Here’s a simple comparison. White bread (GI=70), not a high fiber food by any means, is digested almost immediately to glucose, causing blood sugar to spike rapidly. Brown rice (GI=59), however, is digested more slowly, causing a lower and more subtle change in blood sugar. Once more. By eating a cup of All Bran cereal (GI=51), your blood sugar level will sustain you longer than a cup of corn flakes (GI=83). The numbers say it all. Corn Flakes brings up your blood sugar faster than All Bran. When blood sugar rises and falls rapidly, the body is stimulated to eat again. What? Never during the holidays.

During the holiday season you need to be particularly aware of a high fiber diet of which many are low to intermediate-GI foods. Otherwise you will be seeking a serious weigh loss plan in the new year from overeating refined and processed foods, i.e. cakes, pies, cookies.

To stave off the indulgences, eat low-GI foods such as beans, vegetables, fruits and certain whole-grains. These choices also effect the amount of fat absorbed in the body, and less calories to burn off. You stay full and away from that beckoning buffet! Fiberlady reminds you that they don’t call it the holiday spread for nothing.

High fiber foods are crucial when balancing a low glycemic diet. Your blood sugar will maintain a slow, even rate so you can ease your way through holiday gatherings without too many ups and downs. You really can’t fumble this balancing act because high fiber foods provide the perfect safety net on the Glycemic Index. It might be enough reason to bring GI Joe home for the holidays.
